Juvéderm Fillers at a glance

Juvéderm® is a family of five cross-linked hyaluronic acid gels from Allergan Aesthetics, each matched to a depth. Concentration runs 15 to 25 mg/mL, and each gel is FDA-approved for named areas in adults over 21. Labeled duration is up to one year, or up to two years for Voluma® XC in the cheek.

Gels behind one name
Same molecule in each, cross-linked to a different degree, so depth and how much the area moves decide which one is opened.

What is in a Juvéderm® syringe?

One word, five products, all the same molecule. Juvéderm® is Allergan Aesthetics' family of hyaluronic acid fillers, approved by the FDA as Class III medical devices under premarket approval rather than as drugs. Cross-linking stitches loose strands into a stable gel that holds its shape for months. Concentration across the family runs 15 to 25 mg/mL, and labeled duration is up to one year, or up to two years for Juvéderm® Voluma® XC in the cheek.

  • Hylacross: Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC
  • VYCROSS®: Volbella® XC, Voluma® XC, Volux® XC
  • Concentration runs 15 to 25 mg/mL
  • All five can be dissolved with hyaluronidase
  • XC means 0.3% lidocaine in the gel

How does one Juvéderm® differ from another?

The area picks the gel, not the other way round. Cross-linking sets how a gel resists being flattened, which injectors call G prime. A high-G-prime gel holds a projection; a lower one blends.

  • Firm and deep: Volux® XC, Voluma® XC
  • Thin tissue: Volbella® XC, still placed deep
  • Folds and lip body: Ultra XC, Ultra Plus
  • The plane is decided first; the gel follows

Notes on the products named above

Juvéderm® Ultra XC — 24 mg/mL Hylacross gel. Softer and more hydrophilic than the VYCROSS® products, so it swells more in the first 48 hours. Used when a lip needs body rather than border definition. Covered in depth on the lip filler page.

Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC — Same 24 mg/mL concentration as Ultra XC with heavier cross-linking, placed deeper. It is approved for wrinkles and folds, not for lip augmentation. A fold is more often treated at the cheek that produced it than in the crease, which the smile lines page covers.

Juvéderm® Volbella® XC — 15 mg/mL VYCROSS® gel, the lowest concentration in the collection. Low swelling and smooth spread make it the choice for thin skin. FDA-approved for correction of infraorbital hollowing, an area most fillers are used in off-label, and placed deep there rather than superficially. See the under-eye page.

Juvéderm® Voluma® XC — 20 mg/mL VYCROSS® gel with high lift capacity, placed deep and usually on bone. FDA-approved for cheek augmentation, chin augmentation to improve chin retrusion, and temple hollowing, in adults over 21. Labeled up to 2 years in the cheek, the longest duration in the family. See the cheek and chin pages.

Juvéderm® Volux® XC — 25 mg/mL VYCROSS® gel, the firmest in the collection. Defines a border that already exists rather than creating skeletal projection. Jawline work typically takes 2 to 4 mL. See the jawline page.

How it goes

01

Assessment

Nothing is marked until photographs are taken. Bone, fat, skin and asymmetry are read at rest and moving.

02

Plan and price

You see the numbers before anything is opened: product, plane, syringe count and cost, written down.

03

Placement

Topical anesthetic first, then needle or cannula. Product goes in slowly, each side compared against the other.

04

See results

By two weeks swelling has resolved. Photographs are repeated, and anything further is added then.

Most of your hour is talking, looking and marking; injecting is the shortest part.

What happens during a Juvéderm® appointment?

Topical anesthetic sits for 20 minutes, and every XC gel carries 0.3% lidocaine, so later passes are easier.

  • 45 to 60 minutes, most of it assessment
  • Swelling mostly gone in 3 to 7 days
  • Bruising is common at lip and eye
  • Hyaluronidase and a written complication protocol on site

How long does Juvéderm® last?

Give it two weeks before you judge it. Labeled duration runs up to one year for Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Volbella® XC and Volux® XC, and up to two years for Voluma® XC in the cheek. Most patients sit inside the labeled range rather than at the top of it. Movement shortens it: a lip fades faster than a cheek on bone.

Who is Juvéderm® for?

A good candidate

  • Midface flattening, the cheek lost projection at bone
  • Lips needing 0.5 to 1 mL of definition
  • A chin short on projection in profile
  • A jawline border softened but still present
  • Infraorbital hollowing in thin skin, without fluid retention
  • A first filler, where hyaluronidase can dissolve the gel again

Not a candidate

  • Known anaphylaxis or severe allergy history, allergy to lidocaine or other amide anesthetics, or allergy to gram-positive bacterial proteins, each a labeled contraindication worth raising before treatment
  • Bleeding disorders, or anticoagulation the prescribing provider has not cleared for elective injection, which is a question for the prescriber rather than something to work out on the day
  • Crepe, texture or pigment; resurfacing acts on that layer
  • A face already filled beyond what its support holds

A wait rather than a closed door

  • Active infection, inflammation or a cold sore outbreak at or near the injection site, which the label lists as a contraindication; treatment waits until the skin has settled, so telling us changes the timing rather than the plan
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, where these products have not been studied, so treatment waits rather than being ruled out

The first 72 hours, and when to call

01
Stay upright for 4 hours. Skip exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
02
Rest ice on the area in 10-minute intervals for a day.
03
No massage for 2 weeks; the gel is still mobile.
04
Skip alcohol for 24 hours; it dilates vessels.
05
Postpone dental work, facials and heat for 2 weeks: bacteria can trigger delayed nodules.
06
Sleep on your back for two nights.
07
Ask about follow-up timing, contact arrangements, and any additional charges before treatment.

What patients ask

What is the difference between Juvéderm® and Restylane®?

Both are hyaluronic acid; the difference is manufacturing. Juvéderm® gels are smooth and cohesive, spreading evenly into a rounded shape. Restylane® runs two lines: one firmer, one flexible. Neither outperforms the other.

How long does Juvéderm® last?

Labeled duration is up to one year for Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Volbella XC and Volux XC, and up to two years for Voluma XC in the cheek. Most patients land inside those ranges rather than at the top. Enzymes in the tissue break the gel down, and movement speeds that up, so a lip fades faster than a cheek on bone.

Which Juvéderm® is used for lips?

Two of the five. Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Volbella XC are the two products in the family FDA-approved for lip augmentation in adults over 21. Volbella XC is 15 mg/mL and adds definition with less swelling; Ultra XC is 24 mg/mL and adds body. Most first-time lips take 0.5 to 1 mL.

Can Juvéderm® be dissolved?

Yes. Every product in the family is hyaluronic acid, so hyaluronidase breaks it down at any point, most of it within 24 to 48 hours. It is not selective: it reaches some of your own too, and a dense area sometimes needs a second session.

Does Juvéderm® migrate?

Filler moves when too much is placed, when the plane is wrong, or when a syringe is stacked too soon. The lip shows it as a shelf above the vermilion border. A two-week gap limits it.

How much does Juvéderm® cost in Columbus, OH?

Juvéderm® is priced per syringe, and the price differs by product. Current per-syringe pricing sits on the pricing page with a last-updated date. Most single-area plans use one to two syringes, and jawline work two to four.

How many syringes will I need?

Usually one or two, often across two visits. Most single areas take one to two syringes, and a jawline two to four. Lips are the exception, where 0.5 to 1 mL suits most first-timers.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe pressure rather than pain. Topical anesthetic sits for 20 minutes, and every XC gel carries 0.3% lidocaine. Lips and the under-eye are most sensitive; a dental block is available for lip work.

Can Juvéderm® be used under the eyes?

Yes. Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is FDA-approved for correction of infraorbital hollowing in adults over 21, which makes it one of the few fillers approved for that area rather than used off-label there. It is placed deep, on or near bone, because the skin there is thin and a shallow gel shows through. Fluid retention and lid laxity change the answer.

What are the risks?

Ask about follow-up timing, contact arrangements, and any additional charges before treatment.
