Hyaluronic acid is a gel your body already makes. Inside your lip it adds body and defines the vermilion border. It clears over months, and hyaluronidase dissolves it sooner.

Juvéderm® Ultra XC — FDA-approved for lip augmentation and perioral rhytids — the fine lines around the mouth — in adults over 21. A smooth, cohesive gel with lidocaine, meaning it holds together as one piece and carries water well.
Juvéderm® Volbella® XC — FDA-approved for lip augmentation and perioral lines in adults over 21. Lower hyaluronic acid concentration, so it carries less water and swells less visibly in most patients.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC — FDA-approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds in adults over 21. Placement in the lip is an off-label use, which means the FDA has not reviewed that particular use; the gel is the same and that indication has not been through approval. It is more cross-linked, so it holds projection.
Restylane® Refyne — FDA-approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds in adults over 21. Placement in the lip is an off-label use, which means the FDA has not reviewed that particular use. Restylane® gels are more granular and firmer in feel than the Juvéderm® family, which changes how the gel moves in a lip that is constantly in motion.

Swelling peaks at 24 to 48 hours. Serious events are rare. Vascular occlusion is gel blocking a labial artery, and the skin that vessel feeds loses its blood supply. It announces itself with blanching, mottling, or pain that escalates rather than fades. Dissolving it quickly is the treatment; hyaluronidase is on site.
A visible change the same day. Judge it at two weeks, once swelling has resolved. Most then see 9 to 12 months.

Looking overdone is a dosing decision, not a property of the gel. Lips read as overfilled when volume exceeds what the lower face supports, or when product sits above the border. At 0.5 mL it reads as lip.
It stings briefly at each entry point; most patients call it uncomfortable rather than painful. Topical anesthetic sits about 20 minutes first, and every lip product contains lidocaine. The first entry point is the sharpest, over in seconds.
Lip filler typically lasts 9 to 12 months. Gel breaks down faster in tissue that moves, so lips often sit at the shorter end. Product, dose and metabolism shift the number. The effect fades gradually rather than stopping.
Lips look ordinary again in about a week, and the shape is worth judging at two weeks. Swelling peaks at 24 to 48 hours, most on the upper lip. Bruising fades over 3 to 7 days.
Yes, and that is what makes a first treatment reversible. Every hyaluronic acid product placed in the lip can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme, usually within days. Dissolving sometimes takes more than one session, and it clears some of your own hyaluronic acid too.
Repeated overfilling can leave tissue that does not fully return. The exposure is cumulative, so a conservative volume at a long interval differs from a full syringe every four months. Volume placed is recorded visit by visit.
Filler migration is product that has moved above the vermilion border, showing as a shelf or shadow on the skin side. It follows too much volume, superficial placement, and retreating before the previous gel has resolved.
Age is a smaller part of this than people expect. The products used in the lip are FDA-approved for adults over 21, and lips are not treated below that age. Above 21, what decides it is an anatomic reason to treat: a flattened border, a thin upper lip, an asymmetry, and an expectation gel can meet.
Tell the practice the same day — a cold sore history is common. Injection can reactivate herpes simplex virus in patients who carry it, which is why antiviral prophylaxis is prescribed beforehand for anyone with that history. Filler is not injected through an active lesion.
